Environmental Leadership in Action
The ability to address complex environmental and biodiversity conservation problems around the world is increasingly in need. Being successful at meeting this challenge requires environmental leadership - initiating and creating change in a positive way to tackle environmental issues. Traditionally, scientific training of young researchers has focused on the knowledge and skills needed to do research and contribute to science, without much consideration of the separate skills needed to apply this knowledge in real-world situations to solve 'wicked' environmental problems. This is the gap that the CEED Environmental Training Program addresses.
The goal of the program is to develop environmental leaders - young researchers with the scientific and leadership skills necessary to create positive environmental change. We are the inaugural cohort for this program, 16 young researchers from around Australia who met for a week-long training program in Brisbane in early November, 2014. Over five days, we were exposed to training in leadership, facilitation, media communication, and career planning from experts in each of these fields. We also had to opportunity to interact with some amazing environmental leaders from Australia and beyond. Coming out of this week-long program, each of us created a leadership plan, a detailed programme for the coming year with the goal of developing specific leadership skills.
The aim of this website is to create a space for us to document and communicate our ideas, successes and failures over the coming year, both within our own group as well as with other interested researchers and leaders. We hope that you enjoy reading about our adventures. Please feel free to follow along and join in on the conversation!
